Remarkable Reptiles and Other Desert Dwellers

The UHSG visited the Reptilium Terrarien in Landau.  This desert zoo had many different reptiles, as well as some arachnids, meerkats, and monkeys.

Because this is a desert habitat, it was quite warm inside - a nice change from our weather outside.

Our tour guide was an expert on all these desert creatures.  We learned so much from him!  We also had the opportunity to handle some of the animals, including a tarantula.  We had a lot of fun learning about all the animals and exploring their habitats.

It's Not Where You Go, It's Who You Go With

The UHSG Hiking & Nature Club embarked on one last hike for 2017.  We hiked the area around Eulenkopf in Eulenbis.

There were some steep climbs and beautiful views.

Moss was our nature study focus, and there was no shortage of specimens to observe along the way.

We even came across some sheep, and picked up some of their wool left behind on the fences.

The UHSG Hiking & Nature Club wants to remind you...
"Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt." - John Muir

We hope to see everyone back on the trail in 2018.  In the meantime, get out there and explore!

UHSG 2017 Pumpkin Carving Social

Yesterday, the UHSG hosted its annual pumpkin carving party.  Everyone brought their own pumpkin to carve or paint, and a treat to share.

Everyone had a great time, and we all ate lots of treats. By the end of the afternoon we had some beautiful finished pumpkins to take home.

Family Field Trip to Monkey Mountain and Eagle Park

We recently went to France and visited La Montaigne des Singes, or Monkey Mountain.

This park is home to more than 200 Barbary Macaques roaming free in a 60 acres forest.  We enjoyed walking around the park and feeding them popcorn .

After we visited Monkey Mountain, we headed over to another park in the area, La Volarie des Aigles, or Eagle Park. There was a wide variety of birds of prey to see, and they put on a really fantastic bird show.

Our Annual Sunshine Pumpkin Farm Tour

October is a special time of year here in Germany - the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, apples, and PUMPKINS.  Each year the UHSG visits Sunshine Pumpkin Farm in Gerhardsbrunn.

It was a beautiful fall day and we enjoyed our tour of the farm.

Sunshine Pumpkin Farm is not only known for their pumpkins.  They also sell fresh milk from their cows, honey, and other delicious homemade products.

After the tour, we rode out to the pumpkin patch in a trailer pulled by tractor.  Each child took their time choosing the perfect pumpkin.

We ended our day at the farm with hot cider and homemade pumpkin cake.

The UHSG Digs Into Learning at the Edelsteinminen Steinkaulenberg

At the end of September, we had the opportunity to visit Idar-Oberstein and explore the gemstone mines located there.

We learned about different types of precious stones and how they are created.

We also learned how the mine workers dug for gemstones.

After our tour of the mines, the kids (and parents) had fun digging and discovering some gems in the prospecting field. Each child went home with their very own geode.
